Meet the current members of the squishy lab!

Scott Evans (he/him)

is a Professor of Earth-Life interactions (Paleontology) at Florida State. Growing up in upstate New York, he loved exploring local creeks and collecting ancient marine creatures preserved as fossils. Today, he specializes in the study of exceptionally preserved soft-bodied organisms from around the world to learn everything from how they became fossils, to the ways in which they functioned, to what they can tell us about the history of life and changing conditions on Earth. When not flipping over rocks Scott can be found searching for birds, hacking away at the golf course or hanging with his dog Winston.

Maya Roselli (she/her)

received her BA and BS in Music and Environmental Science from FSU where she worked on analyzing trace metals and iron speciation during a Cretaceous Ocean Anoxia Event (OAE-2) with Dr. Jeremy Owens. Currently, she is a master’s student in the Squishy Lab working on describing soft-bodied discoidal fossils from the Devonian Appalachian Basin coupled with geochemical analysis of the rocks in which they are found. More broadly, she is interested in combining geochemical and paleontological techniques to learn more about ancient environments. In her free time, Maya enjoys reading fantasy novels and playing the steel pan with FSU’s steel pan ensemble, Mas ‘n’ Steel.

Martin Fernandez (he/him)

received a BS in Geology from Syracuse University, where he analyzed functional ecomorphology of Cambrian and Devonian marine invertebrates. As Master’s student, Martin is analyzing morphological, taphonomic and sedimentary characteristics in the Silurain and Devonian hydroid, Plumalina. He is interested in evolutionary paleoecology through ecomorphological and stratigraphically informed paleoenvironmental data.

Peter Bellocq (they/them)

received their B.S. in Geology from Rutgers University where they worked on Large Igneous Province related research under Dr. Benjamin Black. Currently, they are developing a project on the Ediacaran with a focus on the period’s soft-bodied biota. They also enjoy playing Magic The Gathering and drawing Lil fellas in their free time.
